Spotters' Grandstand No. 2

Photograph by Bill Clarke

The quaint little bridge called Squeezebelly Entry was not the only grandstand favoured by FGS trainspotters. Bill's photographs show another popular vantage point, which may be familiar in a different context — it's the bridge that led to the sports grounds.

Bill's first photograph looks towards Moses Gate; the second one looks towards the former location of the sports pavilion, cricket pitch, etc. which were on the left immediately over the bridge. On the right was the football field, which is still in use. The figure on the bridge is Frank Coucill (FGS 1948-1955).

The bridge itself appears to be in a sad state, thanks to some unsympathetic repairs to the stone balustrades (carried out in red brick) and the addition of crude wooden fencing, presumably to protect the anti-social from their own stupidity.
