Staff Retirements

Excerpts from Lumen, 1960 - 1980

Contributed by Maureen and Arnold Kay

These excerpts reached me via Les Rothwell, who reports that Maureen and Arnold were given access to some of the archives by retired Farnworth librarian and well-known local historian Ken Beevers.

The way in which Lumen acknowledged retirements from the teaching staff seems to have changed at some point prior to 1960. While earlier editorial boards were apparently content to mark such occasions with a couple of sentences ("He/she taught at FGS since 19xx. We wish him/her well.") the following examples suggest that, for long-serving pillars of the school at least, Lumen's editors were now prepared to offer something rather more thoughtful and appropriate.

The teachers whose retirement notices appear here are:
1. Mr. E.R. Petty;
2. Mr. S.H. Ormerod;
3. Mr. A. Ashworth;
4. Mr. Percival;
5. Mr. S. Horrocks.
