Farnworth Grammar School

Lifeless

Contributed by Ron Hodson

These photographs are possibly the last ever taken of the FGS building. They show the school as it stood, lifeless and deserted, at some time after it was closed in approx. 1983.

With the exception of the scruffy 45-year-old 'temporary' building opposite the girls' entrance, the place appears to be in good order and it's difficult to imagine why any municipal authority in its right mind would ever dream of knocking it down.*

* A few days after Ron's photographs appeared on the website, another regular contributor e-mailed me with the following comment, which I think speaks eloquently for most of us:

"I don't think that the local authority was out of its mind; I think that the mind was narrow, closed and conditioned by political correctness, political bigotry, envy and a vindictive wish to eliminate all traces of what they regarded as an elitist establishment which benefited middle-class snobs. I never regarded myself as a middle-class snob but who am I to argue with political bigots?"

It would be nice to think that the visitors to this website include some of those political bigots.
