Farnworth Grammar School

Municipal vandalism

Photograph lent by Margaret Royle

With the best will in the world it would be difficult to claim that Farnworth is a town blessed with an abundance of elegant buildings. The Grammar School was certainly one of them, however, and in 1964 it was rightly considered a suitable subject for this picture postcard.

Sadly, in 1988 the building was demolished in an orgy of municipal vandalism. The site is now occupied by an undistinguished block of flats and only the railings remain.

To prevent possible misunderstandings I must explain that Margaret supplied the photograph but the moaning is mine.

"Wake up, Clarke, There's a bloke on the balcony taking pictures" "Would someone please give that little bugger Clarke a swift kick in the wotsits? He's fast asleep in the front row" Zzzzzz
