Farnworth Grammar SchoolThe town and the school...and a few other things |

Farnworth is a small, friendly Lancashire town located between Manchester and Bolton in what used to be the industrial north-west of England. The area was once known for coal, cotton and chemical engineering but that's all gone now — as indeed has the Grammar School, which was founded in 1715 and closed 268 years later, when it fell victim to the lunacy of political correctness and the politics of envy. The final blow came in 1988 when, in what is still considered by many to have been an act of politically-motivated vandalism, our elegant school building was demolished to make way for an undistinguished block of flats. ![]() The town's Grammar School never subscribed to the trendy fashions in education which have demonstrably damaged at least two generations of British children. Instead, its dedicated staff did their utmost to ensure that even the most unpromising among us emerged into the world with a decent grounding in the basics, and with the foundations of our future careers firmly in place. And what a variety of careers they turned out to be! As this website demonstrates, our numbers include Architects and Academics, Broadcasters and Biologists, Chemists and Civil Servants, Master Mariners, Motor Engineers, Teachers and Technical Authors. In fact we probably cover most of the alphabet (although if anyone took up Zymurgy* I've yet to hear about it). I've also been able to include at least one knight of the realm, and if I were to bend my 50-year rule just a little bit more I could even include a member of the England football team that won the World Cup in 1966. |
PS1. In addition to the many class and team photographs, the website includes several whole-school panoramas. As many people as possible are identified on each photograph, and if you can add any names I'd love to hear from you. 2. You'll find discussion forums on topics relating to Farnworth Grammar School in general, together with an extensive photo gallery, on Rick Wilson's splendid FGS website at www.farnworthgrammar.co.uk.
