Farnworth Grammar School

The school before 1922

A 1960 Lumen article contributed by Tom Longstaff,
an historic photograph contributed by Ron Hodson
— and a question from Keith Seddon

This photograph was originally published in the Farnworth Journal. The caption reads:

"The opening of Farnworth Grammar School at 3pm on Wednesday 22 November 1922. The contractor, Mr J. Cocker, is seen presenting Mr J. Travis-Clegg, Chairman of the Lancashire Education Committee, with a gold key with which he opened the door and declared the building open. The Chairman of Governors, Councillor J. Kenyon, is looking on and also in the picture is Councillor J. Stones, Chairman of Farnworth Education Committee and the Headmaster, James McCarter, on the extreme right."

The school is no more. The building is no more. Where's the gold key?
