Here's an abridged version of the Bolton Evening News report dated June 2nd, 2005. |

"The wife of legendary Farnworth actor Frank Finlay has died aged 79. Doreen Finlay, whose maiden name was Shepherd, has been described by friends of the couple as "the rock" on which her husband built his illustrious career.
Frank and Doreen Finlay pictured during a visit to Bolton in 1987. Doreen and Frank met while they were both members of the Farnworth Little Theatre - but it was Frank who went on to become the famous actor. Norman Pickles, aged 79, who is still a committee member at the Farnworth Little Theatre, knew the couple when they were young. He joined the theatre company at the same time as Mrs Finlay when they both attended the Farnworth Grammar School. He said: "Doreen was a very vivacious young lady. They were a very devoted couple. When Frank was struggIing when he first turned professional she supported him and they were having a very poor time financially. "When Frank decided to go professional she decided to let him have the limelight and stood back and was there for him." Another friend, Eric Smith, also aged 79 and still acting with the theatre company, added: "Doreen was a very good actress and, in fact, I would say she was on a par with Frank." " |
