Personal Profile

Lynne Schofield

FGS 1951-'58

(now Mrs. L. Asker)

  • Loved my time at FGS, but particularly my time in the 6th form, where I only did the subjects I liked: English, Theology, History — NO SCIENCES! — I really did not like science subjects.
  • After leaving FGS I went to teacher training at Shenstone Training College, attached to Birmingham University, and qualified to teach secondary school pupils.
  • I married Philip in 1962, had several teaching posts in the Midlands, and then gave birth to my daughter, Sara, in 1964.
  • As a result of Philip's job and my urgings we returned to live in the North West. I returned to teaching as I now had my mother on hand to babysit Sara. I only did supply work to begin with, but later as there was a need for teachers, I returned to full-time teaching. As Sara was of school age I began teaching in a primary school and absolutely loved it.
  • I became a deputy head of a primary school in Leigh (Lancs) and later head of a junior school in Haydock, where I stayed until 1992. Unfortunately by now I was thoroughly disenchanted with the whole education system.
  • I left teaching and as my husband wanted to expand his business supplying to opticians we moved down to Worcestershire and took up village life with enthusiasm. Later my daughter and family moved to the village too so my granddaughters could go to the village school.
  • When my husband finally retired and gran was no longer required for babysitting we started to travel and also enjoyed walking and cycling holidays. Those activity holidays are on hold for me at present as I need a new knee, so I only walk my two miniature Schnauzers, garden and read avidly, although a new knee is in the offing.
  • We now live in one of Herefordshire's most beautiful black & white villages in a small, easily maintained house that we can lock up and leave whenever we get the opportunity to take off on our travels.
