Personal Profile

Derek Heywood

  • After leaving FGS in 1952 I joined Allied Colloids, who were then agents for BASF, to work in their labs whilst studying Textile Chemistry at Manchester Tech (UMIST) and Spinning & Weaving at Salford Tech (Salford University). I also played football for Altrincham F.C. but gave this up to play rugby.
  • National Service then came into the picture and I spent two years playing rugby for the RAF, Bath and Sheffield.
  • On leaving the RAF I married Renee Caswell (FGS 1948-'52) and we had 49 wonderful years together before Renee passed away in 2007. We had two daughters: Nicola and Sally.
  • I worked in most Far Eastern countries for a number of years before forming my own company, SACOLA, taking the name from those of my daughters; little did I know that 'sacola' in Portuguese means 'ladies' handbag!'
  • I'm still working, i.e. lecturing and editing textile-chemistry books.
  • I'm Past Chair of the Society of Chemical Industry (SCI), Vice-Chair of the SCI Board of Trustees and a Trustee of SCI Canada.
  • I wish to take this opportunity to thank those people from FGS who supported me with great kindness after Renee's death, especially Erica Hamman and Stella Morris.
