- 1942-'49: Farnworth Grammar School.
- 1949-'52: Manchester University (B.A, Hons English).
- 1952-'53: London University (Cert. of Education).
- July 1956: Left Chetham's Hospital, where I was teaching, to marry Jack Thomas. We lived in Uckfield (daughter b.'58) and later in Kingston (daughter b.'61, son b.'63, daughter b.'65).
I taught between babies.
- 1961-'64: Town Councillor (Lib) in the Royal Borough of Kingston upon Thames, which stirred a great interest in politics (in March '08 we didn't go to bed until 5 a.m. when we knew Obama was home and dry!).
- 1966: Moved to St. Albans for seven years, where I taught in a comprehensive and a grammar school.
- 1973-'76: Jack was sent to the Xerox Corporation in the U.S.
- 1974-'76: I went to Columbia University in New York city, getting an M.A. in '75 and an M.Ed. in '76, both in Counselling Psychology.
- 1976-'79: Jack became President of Xerox of Canada and I was the fundraiser for the Conservation Council of Ontario.
- 1979: We came home, initially to Highgate where I taught for the Inner London Education Authority, then to Central London and finally to Salisbury. To our great joy two of the girls followed us here. Our other daughter is a GP in Plymouth and our son is a banker in New York. They each have three children, giving us twelve grandchildren in all.
- My sister Dilys (now Kendall) was at FGS from 1946-'53.
