Personal Profile

Revd. Bernard Fray

  • I was at FGS from 1955 - 1962. It sounds such a long period in one’s life and yet thinking back, it went so quickly. I’m sure there was a great deal of happiness, security and fun, despite the strictness and discipline we all benefited from.
  • During my time at FGS, I was organist at St Michael's Great Lever.
  • A career in teaching took me from Bury to Lichfield, thence to the south coast and then back north as Head of a boarding school in Robin Hood's Bay.
  • After my wife died I took early retirement and went into the church, going back to uni at Durham (wonderful) and for the past few years I have served here as priest in the parish of St Mary the Virgin, Micklefield, on the outskirts of E.Leeds. I find it really fulfilling and am about to become a grandfather for the first time in July 2010.
  • I often wonder what happened to my contemporaries, although I did contact Mr Stephens a couple of years ago following a reunion we had — 50 years since we started at FGS. Amazing isn't it? I still feel exactly the same and can't believe that life is so short!!
