- When I left FGS in 1946, I worked for Bolton Corporation until 1948 when I went into the RAF and met Margaret, who
was serving in the WAAF at the time.
- We married in 1950 after I left the RAF, and we then lived in
Peel St., Farnworth until 1958, when we moved to the area where we live now — near
Warrington in Cheshire. We had five sons before we left Farnworth and two daughters here.
- I continued to work in Local Government till 1955
and then changed to the UK Atomic Energy Authority at Risley from 1955 to
1973.
- In 1973 I bought an old van and with our three youngest teenage children we attempted to
drive overland to New Zealand. We didn't get very far though, and returned after a
couple of months of camping around to start again.
- I took up painting pictures (I sold a few) whilst Margaret continued with her career as a
dental health educator. I also became a Motorcycle Training Officer &
Examiner for a national organisation, training instructors & advanced
riders.
- I also became a teacher of exercise & relaxation around the
region, and Margaret taught in both categories part time. This continued until we both retired in 1996. We then got rid of the
car, changed to pedal cycles and have kept active since, although
Margaret's hip has gone a few months ago; she now awaits a replacement operation
but still walks a little each day, and I still cycle.
- In our retirement years we have done a lot of walking in the mountains and
forests, especially in Slovenia, but that's on hold at the moment.
- It's not been an orthodox career maybe, but we wouldn't have changed a
thing. We currently [Jan 2012] have our seven children (the eldest will get his bus pass in March!!), eighteen
grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren spread around the country. We all
got together in S. Wales in 2010 for our Diamond Anniversary - it was like
being at a soccer match!!
