Alan Ball (front row, extreme right) was a talented footballer who eventually played for England in the 1966 World Cup final, in which we beat West Germany (as it then was) 4-2 after extra time, should anyone need reminding. That final will also be remembered for the comment made by BBC commentator and fellow FGS Old Boy Kenneth Wolstenholme when the crowd spilled onto the pitch as Hurst scored England's fourth goal: "They think it's all over. It is now!" For the benefit of younger readers, who may find it difficult to believe that England has ever won anything that matters, details of all the games in the 1966 World Cup finals can be found at www.the-english-football-archive.com/england/world_cup/1966.htm. |
