1955 Summer Lumen: Editorial

I know, I know. This is from 1955 and so it breaks my self-imposed 50-year rule. But it's my website... and I think this piece in particular is worth including for the questions it raises today, namely:

1. How on earth did the ethos that underpins this editorial come to be regarded, in less than 50 years, as 'elitist' and somehow shameful?
2. Does anyone really believe that the country is better off as a result?
