Farnworth Grammar School

Remember these?

Contributed by Ron Hodson, Keith Seddon, Joan Bottomley and Shirley Ingham

A miscellany of vintage 1950s items, rescued from dusty oblivion
and included especially for those of us who never attained the dizzy heights of
prefecture or school colours...

Prefect's badge

Prefect's cap

Cricket colours

Question: what sort of headgear did girl prefects wear in those days?*

* Barbara Aspey wrote to say that, when she was a prefect in 1955 "...the girls wore a green felt hat with a brim, similar to the navy one worn by all the girls but not quite so big and ugly!"

That tie has surely held together many a bulging satchel.

Domestic Science apron
Each girl was required to make her own apron; this one is Joan Bottomley's...

...and here is Joan's geometry book.

Finally — a mystery object...

This exhibit was spotted by Shirley Ingham during a visit to the New Bolton Lives gallery in the Bolton Museum. An accompanying card reads:

    "Farnworth Grammar School Cap:

Farnworth Grammar was opened in 1715. During the 1940s it became part of a new national education system. All children in the area took an exam aged 11 to decide whether they should go to a grammar school, a secondary modern or a technical school. This system was intended to direct children to the best school for them, regardless of their social background.
While the new system gave opportunities for many, critics saw it as still offering a second-rate education to most. In 1982 the education system in the area was completely reorganised to establish a comprehensive system and Farnworth Grammar School was closed."

Can any of our Very Senior Wrinklies remember FGS boys wearing caps like this one? I started at FGS in 1945 and they certainly weren't in use then. Could it possibly be a cap from the other Farnworth Grammar School in Widnes?
