The editors prepare this, their last editorial as the horizon is dimmed by the
rapidly approaching examinations which are of such importance to the Upper Fifth
and Sixth Forms. To all those who are taking them, we wish every success.
Society meetings have been greatly curtailed throughout the whole year. The
present term has seen only the Photographic Society functioning under Mr. Wotton.
The annual Geographical Excursion this year was to Malham, and the event proved so
attractive, that three coaches have been filled. We hoped that the weather man would
allow us a fine day.
On Friday, May 20th, a party of sixth-formers attended two lectures at Manchester
University. The "Arts" section heard a lecture on "Why read poetry?" and the
"Science" group a lecture on "Automatic Trial and Error." Visits were also paid to the
Museum, the new Arts Library and the McDougall Centre. The purpose of the visit
was to give intending undergraduates an insight into the working of the University.
The annual sports on Wednesday, June 15th, again provided a basis for the old
question : "Which is the cock house?" A cursory glance at the houses failed to reveal
the potential champions. We were, however, assured of some good sport, regardless
of who finally prevailed.
This term sees the departure of several members of the staff, as well as of many
pupils. Most people in school do not realise the length of Mr. Western's stay, since the
war obtruded into his teaching career. He is now returning to his native Yorkshire.
Mrs. Lawrence, Miss Fowler and Mr. Roscoe have all been at Farnworth for some time.
We express our gratitude to those who are leaving, for what they have done, and wish
them success in their new posts.
It only remains for us to wish everyone a very enjoyable holiday.
BETTY DEAN, MARGARET HASSALLS, G. M. TIDESWELL, K. J. DENNER.
