1948 Tennis Report

From a copy of Lumen lent by Ron Hodson

This season has been quite successful and we have cancelled only one match on account of bad weather. We wish to thank the members of Staff who have helped us at practices, and also the girls who have made lunches.

Team Criticisms

ENID COULTHURST Has an accurate service, a powerful forehand drive and a fairly reliable backhand, but she should use a greater variety of shots and do more "placing." Her play at the net is good.

JEAN RATCLIFFE Jean's play has improved all round—-—Playing with Enid, this couple should have won many more sets in matches. Unfortunately, they often failed to save vital points.

JEAN DEELEY Has been a rehable.member of the team. Her service has improved, her backhand is good and her forehand has speed. She needs to show more anticipation.

ALICE THORNLEY A very promising player who has a good forehand drive and who can place her shots intelligently. Her service and backhand need much practice.

ALWENA LLOYD-JONES and WINIFRED LOFTUS Played extremely well in a few matches, but their stroke production needs more thought and practice if they are to prove really reliable. Alwena is very useful at the net and Winifred's service can also be relied upon.

EDITH EDGE As secretary is to be thanked for the splendid fixture list she obtained and for the good work she has done as umpire. She has also helped the team on several occasions.

Up to the time of going to press the team has played 10 matches, winning 7 and losing 3. The house matches have still to be played and the Singles Championship will be played at the end of term.
