1948 Netball Report

From a copy of Lumen lent by Ron Hodson

The weather this season was very favourable and we were able to play many enjoyable matches.

As can be expected, the age limit necessitated many changes in the Junior Team, but we hope that all who played for the team will have benefitted by their experience.

Our thanks go to the mistresses who have helped us, Mr. Lloyd who has kept the courts in such excellent condition and all the girls who have made refreshments.

1st VII

G.D. JOAN WARING. A very steady reliable player who has played consistently well throughout the season. She is very enthusiastic.

D. ENID COULTHURST. Enid combines well with Joan to make a strong defence. The positioning and anticipation are good.

D.C. AUDREY MCCOWEN. A quick player who can always be relied upon to intercept intelligently and pass accurately.

C. JEAN RATCLIFFE. Jean has been an excellent captain, always inspiring her players. She is a clever and untiring player and a real pivot of the team.

A.C. ALWENA LLOYD-JONES. Speed, agility and energy make Alwena an excellent player and a valuable member of the team, but occasionally her passes tend to be inaccurate.

A. ALICE THORNLEY. Another lively player who always manages to free herself from the most tenacious defence. Her shooting is admirable.

G.S. MARGARET HASSALLS. Margaret's speed and positioning have greatly improved and her shooting at times is excellent.

2nd VII

G.D. MARGARET POTTER. Should learn to move more quickly and use her height to a greater advantage.

D. JEAN DEELEY. Marks her opponent well and her jumping is good. Her passes should be more accurate.

D.C. JEAN FLETCHER. Combines well with the other centre players and her enthusiasm and energy have often been a source of encouragement to her team.

C. MARGARET COOKE. A quick player but she tends to run with the ball. Her passing is erratic at times.

A.C. JEAN DAVIES. Jean jumps, intercepts and passes well and her anticipation is good. On several occasions she has fully justified her inclusion in the 1st VII.

JOAN WILLIAMSON. She moves about the court quickly and dodges well. Her shooting needs to be more reliable.

G.S. LILIAN LLOYD. Should learn to get free more quickly when in the circle. Combines well with Joan but her shooting is erratic.

Brenda Bennett, Jean Tonge and Brenda Wardle have also played and will probably show the results of this experience next season.

Junior VII

Of the junior team, Jean Massey, Eileen Bathan, Irene Topping, Stella Morris, Anne Higson and Kathleen Fletcher are very promising players.
