1948 Cricket Report

From a copy of Lumen lent by Ron Hodson

The 1st XI has had a very successful season, having lost only one match and that after declaring. Owing to the continual successes of the opening bowlers, Davies, W. D. and Finlay, and the early batsmen, Davies, W. D., Crossley, Matthews, and Davies, E. B., some members of the team have had few opportunities to demonstrate their abilities with bat or ball, but nevertheless, have retained their keenness in the matches, as has been demonstrated by their enthusiastic fielding. The bowling'has been varied and accurate and the batting strong, though the calling and running between the wickets could be improved. Very few 2nd XI matches have been played and the team has been constantly changed. Good performances have been recorded by Whittle, Radcliffe, Entwistle and Parkinson.

Our thanks are due to Mr. Lloyd, the groundsman, Honeyford, the scorer, and Brenda Bennett and the girls who have prepared and served the refreshments.

Team Criticisms

CROSSLEY, S. (Capt). Has proved an able and enthusiastic captain and kept good discipline on and off the field. His wicket keeping has been consistently good and he has been very reliable as opening batsman.

DAVIES, W. (Vice-capt.). One of the mainstays of the team. Opening bowler and opening batsman has rarely failed to distinguish himself with either bat or ball, and has several excellent performances to his credit. Good in the field.

MATTHEWS, D. A forceful and attractive batsman, at present at the top of the averages.

FINLAY, B. A. Together with Davies, W., has almost monopolised the bowling. His left arm show bowling has been very effective and he has also batted well. Could be more active in the field.

DAVIES, E. B. Has been consistently good with the bat, but had few opportunities to bowl. Fielding tends to be uncertain.

WILLIAMS, B. T. A useful all-rounder who has not often been called upon. Batted well against Salford G.S.

CLARE, W. A very enthusiastic member of the team. Good close-in fielder.

WALKER, K. Another enthusiast who has had little to do except display his fielding ability.

PENNINGTON, W. B. Very much improved and his enthusiasm in the field is not excelled by any member of the team. Batting is erratic.

HASLAM, D. Has had a disappointing season with the bat, but has been excellent as a slip fielder.

YATES, D. A left-handed batsman who has made some useful scores.

JOHNSON, E. Has not yet played in mid-week matches; has been a useful member of the side for Saturdays. A promising batsman and bowler and very good in the field.
