Farnworth Grammar School

Excerpts from Lumen
(1940, Summer Term)

The magazine was lent by Jim Pedley

The following pieces all appeared in the 1940 Summer Term edition of Lumen. Less than a year after the declaration of war, it appears that WWII hadn't really started to bite hard into school life; this can be inferred from the magazine's editorial, in which the collapse of Belgium and Holland, and the fall of France, are mentioned only in passing. Nevertheless some of the pupils seem to have caught the patriotic spirit in their poems.

The A.F.S. referred to in the Editorial was the Auxiliary Fire Service. I think they were the people who commandeered the school gym for the duration of the war.

The extracts include a warm appreciation of Mr. James McCarter, who was Headmaster of FGS from 1909 to 1932
